Responsible for supervising the Heat Treat Department



  • Provide written schedules for each furnace with enough work for 24 hours each day to satisfy service and production requirements.
  • Verify and monitor equipment to assure set-ups (speeds, feeds, atmosphere flows, load sizes) are correct for work being processed per written instruction. Train employees to survey equipment for mechanical defects or preventative maintenance and report findings to maintenance department.
  • Verify with previous shift supervisors, lead men and operators for indications of abnormal operations.
  • Inspect and maintain areas of department and plant for cleanliness, neatness and safety. Dispose of broken pallets, cartons and crates. Stage empty customer containers neatly to return to customer on next available truck. Empty trash bins every day.
  • Verify with quality control inspectors, supervisors and lead men to assure quality of processed work at change of shift is within required specifications.
  • Verify scheduled work is properly staged for processing.
  • Monitor activity of employees under your direction to assure maximum output. Train employees for effective use of equipment, inspection and in process inspection.
  • Verify and train employees that completed orders are verify inspected, identified, in proper containers and moved to their next designated area.
  • Verify staging area of raw materials and finished products are maintained in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Provide written schedules and instructions to assure no commitments are missed.
  • Provide continuous instruction of job knowledge to lead men and production workers. Instruct why and what reasons specific temperatures, atmospheres, quenches, etc. are used in processing.
  • Make employees aware how their errors can cause extreme costs of re-running, freight charges, sorting, and scrapping.
  • Hot order and rush order listings from previous day must be verified first thing in the morning to assure promised delivery dates are met.
  • Work with quality control to minimize re-runs and rejections.
  • Each supervisor of a shift is responsible for quality and productivity from his shift.
  • Must be familiar with CQI-9 heat treat standard and participate in annual self-assessment.
  • Work with other departments on new jobs, quality and maintenance issues.
  • Schedule department to ensure customer, quality and budget requirements are met.
  • Provide capital planning and continuous improvement ideas.
  • Ensure environmental compliance.
  • Meet with customers and outside vendors as needed.
  • Verify operators are wearing PPE and observing safe work practices
