Function


Lead Veneer Lathe Engineer

Worldwide leader in the design and manufacturing of custom machinery for the lumber, plywood, and OSB panel industry, is seeking a self-motivated Mechanical Engineer with experience designing machine tools or other precision rotating machinery to join our Design Engineering team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of the veneer lathe product line.
  • Design machinery parts subjected to high loads, wear, and fatigue.
  • Select the appropriate bearings, roller screws, balls crews, hydraulic cylinders and other precision machinery components to incorporate into new and existing designs.
  • Complete detailed manufacturing packages, including fabrication and machining drawings and associated bills of materials.
  • Complete engineering calculations, analysis as required. (strength, motion, fatigue, HP, etc.)
  • May assist with conceptual equipment design layout as part of the sales process.
  • May participate in research and development of new product applications.
  • Interacts with internal groups (Controls Engr, Service, & Manufacturing) to ensure designs and specifications meet the company’s integrated needs.
  • Assists customers and field service personnel with start-up commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Interacts with customers, vendors, project managers, and peers to gather requirements and facilitate completion of the project
  • Occasional travel to customer’s site and other locations to finalize project requirements or assist in commissioning equipment.

 

Requirements


  • BSME degree.
  • Experience designing spindle assemblies with tapered roller bearings, roller bearings, and/or angular contact ball bearings.
  • Experience designing lubrication systems for high speed rolling element bearings and solid bushings.
  • Experience specifying alloy steels and heat treatment for use in precision, high load machinery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • Design knowledge in these areas: hydraulics, pneumatics, machining and welding processes.
  • Material handling experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the veneer peeling process is ideal but not required.
